How Pvc Membrane Marvels In Modern Roof Waterproofing Approaches

PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) is one of the most environmental-friendly options in the waterproofing industry. It is a recyclable sheet offering uniform thickness and flexibility. PVC membranes are welded together with mechanized tools and machinery, forming a smooth connection in overlaps and joints. It is suitable for balconies, below-ground systems, flat roofs, green roofs, etc.

PVC Membranes – A Cut Above the Rest

With new modifications and techniques being added to the waterproofing systems, millions of individuals around the globe are opting for a change. Chemical compositions of additives, such as pigments and stabilizers are modified to suit the roofing requirements of today. Plasticizers also render better performance, permitting producers to offer warranties of 30 years or more.

Other features include:

  • Additional colors
  • Higher resistance to puncture, impact, and flame
  • Durable against rooftop contamination and soiling
  • Low-temperature flexibility
  • High-temperature tolerance

Since its production, more than 15 billion sq. ft. has been installed globally. Different types of PVC membranes have been marketed, such as fiberglass reinforced, polyester reinforced, and fleece-backed membrane.

What is Adhered PVC Membrane?

PVC membranes are fastened in two ways:

  1. Mechanically-attached
  2. Chemically-adhered

Adhered PVC membrane is glued to the roof’s substrate, providing a strong air and water barrier. The paste is applied to the substrate and the membrane (underside) with rollers. Afterwards, the joints or seams are welded for a fool-proof seal. The adhesive can also be applied through the spraying method.

Different cover boards are suited for adhered PVC membranes: Gypsum, High-Density Polyisocyanurate, and OCB plywood are some examples.

N.B. Ensure that the adhesives are not excessively wet.

Research

In 2000, The US Dept. of Energy and the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) managed a study of a large store replacing its EPDM roof with a white PVC top: The size of the roof was 100,000 sq. ft. The study confirmed that the PVC membrane reduced the demands of air conditioning by 14% and energy usage by 11%. Financially, the savings amounted to $7,200 per sq. ft.

Application of PVC Membranes for Roof Waterproofing

Besides concrete, PVC membranes are also applied on metal decks to render a long-lasting and attractive waterproofing solution. According to clients, it is a versatile solution for their problems. Its properties include:

  • Ageing resistant
  • Chemical resistant
  • Impact resistant
  • Economical
  • Maintenance-free

Reinforced membranes (PVC) are added with materials, such as polyester or glass fabric. Glass reinforced membranes are used for fully bonded applications. Moreover, they are elongated and stretched. Polyester membranes, on the other hand, possess low stretching capability; they are optimal for mechanically-fastened applications.

Types of PVC Roofing Membranes

  1. Standard PVC Roof Membrane

A standard PVC roof comprises of two layers (polyester added for strength). It is installed with fasteners or adhesives.

  1. PVC KEE Roof Membrane

Certain elements in PVC membranes require flexibility. As liquid plasticizers vaporize with time, KEE (Ketone Ethylene Ester was produced). It is a chemical that elongates the elasticity limits and time, augmenting the roof’s life expectancy. It can also be used with asphalt.

  1. Fleece Backed PVC Roof Membrane

Fleece-based materials are easier to install. In windy conditions, individuals prefer PVC roofing installation for superior protection: It renders additional support to low-slope or flat roofs.

N.B. Standard and KEE products can also possess fleece-backing.
